We were all ready to be back in school after the Holidays and some long snowed-in days.
The children have enjoyed some new works in the classroom. We are learning about the continent Asia these days. The children are welcome to bring any souvenirs from Asia, to share with friends. We will be celebrating Chinese New year some time during the last week of January.
We are so happy to have Ryo Boisvert join in our room. He is three and loves to cut lots of paper!
It was great to see many of our families at the open house for the new Indiana Montessori Community School. We are very excited about this addition to our Montessori family . The school is located on Route 31 just south of Whiteland Road. The next open house will be held on March 1st.
Please mark your calendars for a walk through for practical life on January 27th.
This is the most popular area with children and is quite unique to Montessori rooms.
We will talk/discuss about:
- Why children love to mop, clean and dust over and over again.
- What is the connection between the mind and the movement of hands?
- How practical life is tied into preparing the brain for math and language in the later years.
Please join us for a discussion and exploration of ideas to implement at home as well.

May the celebrating continue. This week in the Oak Room we traveled to Sweden to learn about the European holiday of St. Lucia’s Day! The children made star and candle headbands and enjoyed a presentation by our own Miss Kristen all about this special day. She also helped us make some delicious St. Lucia rolls!
The children in Sweden also like to make gingerbread treats for this holiday, so we took the opportunity to make our own gingerbread boys and girls as well as a fun gingerbread boy craft to go along with the traditional gingerbread man story!
We will be spending our last week before break talking about the Christmas season and what it means to give to others and this important time with our families. Our class party will take place on Thursday afternoon. If your child would like to bring in a class gift, we will be having them open those at our first circle and putting them with any other “donations.” This is an excellent opportunity for us to teach the children the joy of giving something without having to get something in return.
The children will also be getting their classroom cleaned up before the break. This includes cubbies! Please check on Friday to make sure that all items except changes of clothing and nap packs are taken out of the cubbies so that they may be cleaned over the break. Thanks for the help!

We will continue the celebrations with St. Lucia Day (Sweden) this week and Los Posados and Christmas next week. When: Saturday, December 14 2-4pm
Where: Glens Valley Nature Park – Sledding

***Compass news- when you receive an email and it says you have an Activity Report or Activity it means there is news about the classroom or about your child. This is the main way we are communicating, let me know if you are having any difficulty getting to this or have any questions.
One last final note is to mark your calendars! Indiana Montessori Community School will be hosting an open house for the Adolescent Program on January 18th from 2-4pm. If you are interested in viewing the new school and/or asking some questions/meeting Ms. Jennifer this is your chance!

December is the month of many celebrations at Center Grove Montesssori! This week we talked about Hannukah and St. Nicholas Day. We made latkes, lit our menorah and played many games of dreidel. We also made special paper shoes for St. Nicholas to leave a treat in. The children really enjoyed learning about the differences and similarities of these holidays to those we celebrate with our families.
Next week we will be discussing the European holiday of St. Lucia. Also, we, of course, will be making our usual Christmas crafts and baking some delicious treats for our party on the 19th. From 2-3 pm on that day we will be having our Christmas celebration with games and treats to share. In lieu of staff gifts we ask that gift givers bring in an item for our classroom. A wish list will be posted on the bulletin board by the front door.
A reminder: we have had a few issues with children not having a change of clothing at school. Please take the time to check your child’s cubby to make sure they have everything they need.
Please Note:
It is getting chilly outside. Please remember that we do take the children outside if the temperature is above 32 degrees, so they need to have appropriate outdoor clothing. With the cold mornings and warmer afternoons, we find dressing in layers to work best in keeping the kids comfortable.
Child quote of the week:
Andrew: “These onions don’t like my eyes.”
Children’s Holiday celebration

December is usually a hectic time for many adults as they prepare for the holidays. Young children are very aware of the excitement in the air. As guides we would like to ignore the exuberance that surfaces in the classroom, but we found that it is more constructive to channel the children’s excitement into purposeful activities. One popular idea with children is to learn about different holiday customs around the world.
We celebrated Hanukkah this week. Cooking and tasting latkes was a lot of fun. We will also be celebrating St Nicholas day, St. Lucia Day and Los Posada and Christmas.
The children will also create gifts for their parents and wrap them all by themselves. They will collectively glue a piñata in preparation for the Los Posada and Christmas party. We place little treasures into the piñata and the children each take a turn to break it open.
The party will take place on the last day before winter break. On that day the children can bring a small present for their classroom. This custom has evolved at CGM. Rather than exchanging gifts with each other, (including teachers) the children give a small gift that can be used by the entire classroom community. The children enjoy opening their presents and eventually seeing them used in the classroom. It becomes their contribution to their classroom community. This year the piñata party will be on Dec.20th.
Dates to remember
Dec.9th St. Nicholas
Dec.13th St. Lucia
Dec.20th Christmas and piñata party. Open presents for the classroom.
Here is a wish list for our classroom.

Dear CGM Families,
I am so happy to announce the opening of our second location, Indiana Montessori Community School (IMCS) in Whiteland, Indiana.
IMCS will be serving children ages 21/2 to 18 years. It will have a primary, elementary and an adolescent program.
We are enrolling NOW for the IMCS location. The plan for IMCS is to start the primary program in January 2014 and in August 2014 to start the elementary and adolescent programs.
We have thought about taking the step ahead to make it possible to have an adolescent program for a while. Let’s ALL make it happen. We have open spaces for new friends at IMCS. We need everyone to spread the word and help with enrollment.
Please ! Yell it from the rooftop !
CGM will continue at its current location to serve with a primary and an elementary programs, (ages 21/2 to 12 years). CGM families are welcome to choose either location according to their convenience.
I know that I have been blessed with the wonderful support from the gracious families of CGM! Together, we have been providing a great place for our children in the past years.
To come this far is definitely not a one man show. I am surrounded with great families, including our staff families, that have special and varied talents and expertise that make us successful.
We hope to grow more together!
Please check out the new website, which is still under construction. www.indianamontessorics.com
Take a drive to IMCS at 531 U.S 31 South, Whiteland IN 46184. It’s just 7 miles away from CGM.
There is construction underway to bring the place up to the state required code. That is expected to be completed by end of December.
If you have any questions, suggestions or concerns please feel free to call, email or talk to me anytime. You can always talk to Brenda for more information.
Thank you for all your continuing support.
Sincerely,
Indu Agnihotri

What a busy week! All of the children were so active and busy doing jobs and playing with friends. We spent a lot of time this week making discoveries about Native Americans as well as the pilgrims that came across the ocean on the Mayflower. Many of you may have seen our wonderful totem poles at the front of our hallway. We appreciate that so many of our families took the time to help their child make such wonderful additions to the pole. You can really see the student’s personalities in every creation!
Nice headband Andrew!
We are only in school for Monday and Tuesday of the upcoming week, so we will be spending our time talking about Thanksgiving, baking and the older children in our classroom and the Maple room have been practicing a play to perform for their younger peers. This will be a lot of fun for all of us!
Happy Birthday Evan and Ava!
Please Note:
Please take the opportunity during this break to update or check your child’s change of clothes in their cubbies. We prefer two sets of clothes that are seasonally appropriate. Thanks for your attention to this matter.
Child quote of the week:
Miss Darci: “Ava, what do you want your Native American name to be for your headband?”
Ava: “Distracted…”
