In the tulip room we continue to celebrate holidays around the globe, visiting Sweden and making St. Lucia buns was a hit last week and making latkes, lighting the menorah, learning the dreidal song and reading Hanukkah stories this week.
We will have a christmas gift opening party Wednesday, as well as celebrate the Mexican holiday of Los Posados with a taco bar. Some mexican puppet friends, visited our classroom on friday and gave us our food assignments. If you haven’t seen these, please ask your child or check their backpack! We are doing this pitch-in style, feel free to send a snack or a lunch on Wednesday if you are concerned that your child won’t care for the food, or don’t if you know your child will be satisfied with the taco bar.
We sincerely enjoyed our caroling at the nursing home so much that we decided to carol local businesses! We found that to be a blessing to us and the businesses! In addition to our acts of giving we are hosting 3 Days of Giving. The tulip room is practicing 3 days of giving in honor of the giving season. The first day of giving we gave to those who do things for us; the library, the field, the businesses who let us trick or treat them and all those special people who come to teach us so many wonderful & interesting things. The second day involves making a gift for one of our family members and the third is a random act of kindness (which is attached). This gift is to be given to someone who won’t and/or can’t ever give anything back. Please help your child find the appropriate person or place to gift this too. This act of giving came home with your child, if you haven’t seen it yet please ask them about it, if you have any questions let us know. In a world of getting it is so wonderful and peaceful to see the children participating in the thrill of giving, their faces light up so much when they see the joy they are bringing to others.
On Wednesday the children will be bringing home their green folders which contain fun work as well as follow up work to lessons they have had, we ask that you spend some time with your child over break finishing up this work, it will keep them well practiced as children. Thank you so much for blessing us with the honor of spending each and very day with your children, we consider it a blessing beyond any to know such wonderful people.
Have a safe and happy holiday break!

On Friday morning, while I sat with our class at our morning circle, the lives of 20 children and 6 adults dedicated to their care were stolen by the violent act of one man’s madness in Newtown Connecticut.
The theft of such innocence and vitality tests my faith in my fellow man and leaves me frightened of what darkness may be lurking just beyond our front doors.
I am filled with sadness for the community and families that have lost love ones in this tragedy. My mind will never comprehend acts of violence against children, but in my heart I send wishes of peace and prayers of hope to those that are grieving.
I look to the faces of my own children and those that I care for at school to sooth my broken heart. I have chosen a few of my favorite pictures from this week as a gentle reminder to myself and our families to cherish every moment we have with these delicate humans in our care…

Heavy Hearts….

We are with heavy hearts here today at Center Grove Montessori in lieu of the shooting at the school in Connecticut. Please remember that media coverage and adult’s discussions/anxieties can traumatize children that are not directly impacted by a traumatic event. Limit the media coverage you are allowing your children to see and be careful with your actions/discussions around them. If they know about the shooting, don’t hide it from them, let them talk and share their feelings, and be honest. Such a sad day….give them an extra hug tonight.

The “bill” simulation this week was a hit! The children were able to pass several bills, a
few died in the house and others were vetoed by the president. It was so fun, they didn’t
want to stop.
With the winter holidays we begin our series on letter writing with a letter to Santa, then
friendly letters and as is often the follow up, a letter to someone you admire, often being
persons of fame with a request for an autograph, it was letter writing palooza this week!
Beginning our December holiday season was St. Nicolas day, we were lucky enough to
take a “trip” to Brussels with a real Belgian tour guide. We learned about some
landmarks, food, language and culture. We also made Belgian waffles and celebrated
St. Nicolas day as the Belgian elementary children would by having a party with board
games.
In the following weeks we will explore the holidays of Los Posadas, Hanukkah &
Christmas.
LOTS OF CALENDAR Reminders
For the next few weeks we will continue our emphasis on thankfulness and giving to
others. We will be collecting new mittens and gloves to donate to a local charity. Our
elementary class is challenging the school to bring in as many gloves as we did food
items! This amounts to 265 gloves or 5 gloves per student! Wow! We are aware that we
might not make this goal but if we challenge ourselves great things are possible! As of
today the count is 85 pairs of gloves! WOW!
On Friday, December 14th the Tulip room will be visiting Greenwood Villages South and
caroling the residents and delivering ornaments that have been made by extended care.
We will need a couple of chaperones/drivers but all parents are welcome to come. We
will have a rehearsal performance on December 12th at school, performing for the
primary room.
We will also be taking a field trip to the Scottish Rite Cathedral to see The Nutcracker
December 21st at 7:30 p.m. The school will cover the cost of the ticket for your
elementary child and you may purchase additional tickets at $12 each for you, yourself,
friends or family members. These tickets do need to be ordered in advanced and can be
done so with Ms. Brenda and must be done by December the 7th (please RSVP your
student by then as well). We are very excited for this opportunity!
During this season of giving we wish to request that in lieu of holiday gifts for the
teachers we ask that anyone interested in purchasing a gift, focus on gifts for the
classroom!
Our classroom could use:
Gift cards/certificates to
Jo-Ann fabrics
United Art & Education
Teachers pay teachers (website)
The Container Store
Ikea
We could always use these supplies as well:
Erasers
Pencils
Loose leaf paper
Construction paper
Colored pencils
Dry erase markers
Scissors
Cotton yarn
Crochet needles (g or h)
Latch hooking set
Fabric scraps
Ribbon
Poster board (medium sized)
Mark your calendars now! A Walk through math presentation will be held on january
24th at 6:30 pm put this one your calendars now, its a chance to see how your children
use the different math materials!
The children are lucky to have materials that have multi uses and can cross over during
their years in different aged classroom. How nice it is to see them seek out these
familiar materials in their first few months in the elementary classroom and begin to see
how these materials have even more new & exciting things to be discovered in them.
Such is the case with the constructive triangle boxes. The children learn beginning and
advanced shape names, explore congruencies and later the Pythagorean theorem with
these boxes. Ask your child about the triangle box, hexagon boxes and rectangle boxes.

Wow! Our little acorns have been very busy! We are so proud of our students and how much they accomplish every day!
Mittens, gloves and hats, oh my! We are so grateful that the Center Grove Montessori family has such a giving spirit. The children are seeing first-hand what happens when everyone just gives a little; you end up with quite a lot!
The dinosaur jobs are a big hit! As many of you already know, the Children’s museum downtown has a wonderful interactive dinosaur section. Think about a visit over the holiday break!
As we get further into the holiday season, we encourage families to take the time to consider what an impact hectic schedules and additional activities can have on your young child. Children from 3-6 years old have an internal need for order and consistency. We find that in the classroom, when holidays are upon us, keeping our daily schedule, i.e. circle time, lunch and outdoor time consistent helps to alleviate meltdowns and nervousness. And as always, please take time to enjoy the season through the eyes of your children!
Thanks to our special visitor, Luke’s foreign exchange student,Clara, for her presentation on St. Nicholas Day in Belgium. She showed us pictures of the saint (who looks strikingly familiar to another jolly fellow we know), gave us a tasty Belgium waffle to try, and sang us a special song; in French! St. Nicholas puts treats in children’s shoes or stockings, but be careful, or you may get potatoes if you have been naughty! It was the general consensus among the children that St. Nicholas Day was very much like our Christmas!
Child quote of the week:
Mister Adam: “What do we do when we go to sleep at night?”
Grant: “Wake up!”

The Holiday season has officially begun at Center Grove Montessori. We will be having visitors to our classroom that will tell us all about different holidays around the world. We will learn about how children in other countries celebrate their special days and then compare the differences and similarities to our own.
During the next few weeks we will be making a lot of Christmas crafts. Some will go home, but several we will use to decorate our classroom. Please take a peak when you pick up your child to see our beautiful space!
We’re going prehistoric in our science area of the classroom! Due to an increased interest in all things Jurassic, we will begin our study of dinosaurs this month. Hopefully Arhan can help Miss Holly with some of those longer names!
In keeping with our “giving” lessons, we will be donating gloves and mittens to needy children. We have been discussing how giving makes us feel and how we like to help those in need. We have been informed that Target has gloves for $1-$2 per pair. We mentioned to the children that they may be able to get some money from their “piggy banks,” or do a chore and buy some themselves!
A special thank you to all the parents that have been volunteering in the classroom! It’s very helpful to occasionally have an extra pair of hands!
Child quote of the week:
Miss Holly: “Laasya, what are you thankful for?”
Laasya: “I’m thankful my mom is going to open my Strawberry Shortcake Kitchen.”
“Respect all the reasonable forms of activity in which the child engages and try to understand them.“ – Maria Montessori
