Our new security system was installed yesterday. We now have a camera mounted by the front door. We can see you, and buzz you in from the basement. We want to thank our wonderful families that helped make this happen: The Greve Family, The Chandler Family, The Carpenter Family, The Jones Family, The Pollen-Hawk Family, The Katona Family, The Styers-Barnett Family, The Bowman Family, The Berry Family, The Narayanan Family, The Puno Family, Brandon Corbett and his Family, and The Yurs Family. We couldn’t do this without you!

Wow! What a busy week in the Oak Room. Our children were working so hard and exploring so many new things!
We are learning a lot about what we hear around us. Sounds are everywhere. The children were introduced to different kinds of sound this week; Living, Natural, and Artificial. Maybe over the long weekend you and your child can listen for these different types of sound sources at home and while you’re out.
For our peace lesson this week, we have been talking to the children about being kind and have had two more ribbons added on to the kindness wreath. The kids really enjoy this activity and have been thinking of ways to make Miss Darci and I notice they have performed an “act of kindness.”
Welcome to our newest student Gurpartap!
It’s cold, but please remember that we do go outside if it is above 32 degrees, so send those hats and mittens!
Flu season is most definitely here. We sanitize the classrooms regularly, but we are spending more time together indoors. If your child is running a fever or exhibiting any flu-like symptoms, please keep them at home until they are symptom-free for 24 hours. Thanks you.
Next week we will continue our study of Asia with a focus on the country of India. The children will be making flags, preparing food and learning about what life is like for children who live in that particular part of our world.
Child quote of the week:
Celia: “Miss Holly, Santa Claus stinks. I asked for a Barbie and he brought me a ukulele.”
Note: Celia speaks very fondly of her ukulele, but has made this statement to me every day since returning from break. I’m not at all sure what she needs me to do with this information. Maybe I’ll have to write Santa!

As hard as we try, our basement is just chilly! Please have your child bring in a fleece or sweater to leave here at the school and wear during school hours. Thank you!

We were all very excited to be back together after the holidays. The children have enjoyed the few changes in the layout of our room and some new works on the shelves.
In the practical life area we have introduced polishing, sewing and some food prep activities such as orange juicing, cutting veggies and fruits. Children build fine motor skills, concentration, self confidence and independence through these activities.

Please feel free to send in a bag of small size oranges/tangerines, lemons, carrots, celery, radishes, beets, turnips etc. for them to squeeze and cut.
We have started our study of the largest contintent Asia. We will be learning about people, animals, plants, food and famous places in Asia. You are welcome to send in any souvenirs from your travels as a show and tell for us.
We hope that you have marked your calendars for the exciting math walk through the Montessori way ! It is on January 24th from 6:30 to 8:00. Bring any questions or queries you may have about math for that day.
Welcome to Joseph Rhynearson and Jackson Deaton to the Maple room. Joseph is four and Jackson is three years old and they both attend three days in our classroom.

This Week in the Oak Room
The new year is off to a great start in the Oak Room! We have had a lot of fun in the snow, both real and pretend! You may have noticed our beautiful snowflakes and snowmen we made to celebrate this lovely time of year. Miss Darci even got some icicles for us to examine! Very interesting…

Madison and Emery enjoying our “pretend” snow…
Next week we will be learning even more about snowflakes and icicles as we continue our study of the weather. We’re also taking turns as the daily meteorologist and making predictions about the outside temperature. We had an exact hit on Thursday with Maisie’s guess of 36 degrees!
We’re taking a trip east and beginning our study of Asia. There is so much to learn about the world’s largest continent! If any of our families have anything to share from a trip to this area of our planet, we would love to see it.
Give peace a chance. (Yes, I had to go there!) Maria Montessori devoted much of her life to world and inner peace, therefore it is a very important part of our curriculum. We have expanded our “peace” area of the classroom with even more jobs to help the children learn to respect themselves, others and their world, to be kind and respectful and complete activities designed to sooth and calm the spirit. We introduced our “kindness wreath” on Friday. Please ask your child about it; this is an excellent opportunity to discuss what kindness means to your family and see what it means to them.
We are so happy to start the second half of our year and watch your children flourish and grow. Have a great week!
Pretend Snow Recipe: 2 boxes of cornstarch mixed with one can of shaving cream. FYI: this is messy, but so much fun!
Child quote of the week:
Miss Holly: “Would you like to do the sound cylinders with me Collin?”
Collin: “No, thank you. We have enough noise right now.”
“Education today, in this particular social period, is assuming truly unlimited importance. And the increased emphasis on its practical value can be summed up in one sentence: education is the best weapon for peace.” – Maria Montessori

Thank you to all of you for being such a supportive bunch of parents. For taking the time to be so thoughtful about bringing in snacks for our children. The small sized fruits, pears, apples and tangerines have been a great hit! The special Christmas snacks were just adorable.
Welcome to Jasraj Oberoi. He is three and very happy to be part of our Maple room. The experienced children have guided him to navigate his mornings very smoothly. Once again, Jama and I are honored to witness the joy of these powerful children building their sense of community.
We have been celebrating some holidays around the world. Clara, (Luke and Kate Plunkett’s exchange student) who is from Belgium, came to our class room to share the celebration of St. Nicholas. She brought some pictures, sang a song in French about St. Nicholas and brought Belgian waffles for us to taste, made by her. Then at the end of the day, we lined up our shoes for St. Nicholas, pretended to be asleep and found tangerines in our shoes!
Anna, was our St. Lucia this year. She worked hard to make a crown for her to wear just for this day. The children were busy making star headbands and candle crowns. Ms. Kristen came and talked to us about how this holiday is celebrated in Sweden. She helped us make Swedish buns. Then at the end of the day, Moriah (Tulip room) and Anna (Maple room), dressed as St.Lucia brought us the buns to taste. It was lots of fun.
For Chanukkah, children have been making star candle holders from clay. We lighted a menorah and some older children visited the elementary class to help make latkes. We all liked the latkes.
The children had been making a piñata, collectively for Christmas and Posada celebration. It was so much fun to break the piñata and find some presents for us.
Thank you to all the families for all the useful presents to the classroom. The children were excited to see the things that they can use and some items were used immediately. Thank you for the paper, glue, markers, pencils, fractiles, trays, puzzles and gift certificates to Montessori services.
Happy holidays to all our families. We wish you peace in the new year !
