Work plans, spelling tests, lessons, end of the day jobs, presentations and homework, oh my!
The year started off with a “Bang”. We began our school year preparing a classroom puzzle, our clipboards, our binders, our placemats, learning about manners and classroom culture and navigating this world of work plans! Then quickly on to creation stories & the big bang, planet studies, the “dance of the planets”, maybe a song or two from Ms. Kristen & Ms. Melissa (think…our whole universe was in a hot dense state, then nearly 14 billion years ago expansion started…WAIT!..Who knows this song?). The children researched planets, researched animals and researched plants, all while receiving lessons on math operations, materials, grammar & handwriting, spanning across so many different levels. We really feel during this time we have gotten to know where your child is and have a good plan for where they will go.
Each level or year has their own one month work-plan (reduced to a day or week for some) that helps them know what their level will be working on. However we alter these to suit each child, so if a child isn’t ready for a lesson we move it to next month, if they are ready for more advanced lessons, we pencil that in. The children are just now getting used to the flow of their work plans and spelling tests and are coming along nicely.
I’m sure you have been welcoming home exhausted children and our families have been welcoming home exhausted guides, who still need to prepare things for the next day, week or month! Please forgive me in my slowness to blog! But I MUST tell you of all the fun we are having!
Last week we were all fruity for apples! We learned to cut an apple (following detailed instructions!), life cycle of an apple, explored apple seeds and made applesauce. We also had the pleasure of experiencing “Glow Germ”, when Ms. Erica and her nursing student friends (I named them the Germ Squad) came in and let us experience a lesson on how germs spread and travel. Thanks Ms. Erica!
This week we made play dough and learned about the layers of the earth, hemispheres & continents! A special “thank you” to Ms. Toni for coming in to teach us finger crocheting, next week we will start crocheting with needles. We also helped to set a world record! Ask your child about “Read for the Record” with Ladybug Girl and working in a blanket fort. We also wrapped things up with a “five kingdoms brought to life” presentation and a five kingdom salad.
Not to mention PE, music (with Mr. Adam), art (with Ms. Jama), Yoga (with Ms. Hansa), Sign language (with Ms. Taunya) and library time!
This week you will notice we are finally in the swing of things and everyone’s work should’ve came home today, including a practice sheet for next week’s spelling words. We reserve Fridays for spelling tests, but if the children feel ready earlier we can test them at any time during the week. What we have found is that currently the children are so busy during the school day that they aren’t having time to study their words as much as they’d like, so we will send them home on Fridays for the following weeks words so they can enjoy some extra practice time at home. We are also sending home special projects and homework that the children need or want to do but ran out of time to finish during the school day, feel free to ask about any of this special work that comes home.
We are entertaining the idea of letting some of the older children bring home their reading books as well, so you may see them come home one night a week in the near future to read out loud to our parents.
Parent teacher conferences are coming up, October 24th. See Ms. Brenda to sign up for a time slot or if you have a special circumstance where you can’t make it that day. We look forward to sharing our observation of your child in the Montessori classroom with you.
Check Facebook for some pictures of the crazy times in Elementary!
** Did you receive information about the Bubble maker’s class? If not please see Ms. Jama or Ms. Melissa for more information or to express your interest. Bubble makers is a Scuba class for 8 & up. We are trying to put together a group so we could have our own weekend class.

Fall is officially here! The children have been very busy exploring different kinds of leaves. The leaf cabinet is being used to match, trace and cut or poke out leaves. Most children have enjoyed the easel painting.
We are excited to welcome a new student, Bradan Corbett. The children love having new friends in their classroom.
We have a great group of children that love to clean! Dusting and sweeping has been very popular.
The older children will be beginning to move into some advance work soon. We love to see their faces as they discover new concepts and feel accomplishment in themselves.
Parent teacher conferences are coming up on the 24th. Jama and I are looking forward to share great things about your children with you soon!

The trees are already changing. We have been noticing that some of our trees have different colored leaves now! We will officially be starting our study of leaves and the changes they undergo this time of year.
We are still continuing with our study of the world and its continents. We look forward to introducing North America as our first continent study.
Yoga was a big hit this week. The children really respond to this form of exercise and took advantage of the peaceful relaxation and reflection time. Not only is yoga good for our bodies, but our mind and spirit as well!
We have completed our science unit on magnets. We had a great time with our magnet “experiment” and were surprised by their “power.” They work through glass, plastic, cardboard and even wood!
A Note: Please remember that our days are starting to cool down. Jackets are becoming a necessity. We have the children put on whatever outer wear you have sent them in for our morning outside time and sometimes the afternoon if the temperature is below 70 degrees.
Our student quote of the week:
Shriya: “What is that?”
Miss Holly: “That is a water spout.”
Shriya: “Oh! Is there a spider in it?”
Have a great weekend!
Miss Holly.

We really love apples! This week we completed more apple crafts and had an apple slicing job out to practice our cutting skills. The children really enjoyed this activity. Maybe cutting some apple slices or making homemade applesauce would be an activity your child would enjoy doing with you at home!
Some of our students have already completed their continent poking projects! This is a big job and we are looking forward to seeing more finished in the coming weeks.
School pictures went really well. We look forward to seeing those smiling faces in prints!
We had a special visit from Miss Haansa, our yoga instructor, this week. We tried some yoga poses and motions and look forward to our full session this coming Wednesday.
A Note: We are making another request to have your child bring in a water bottle to keep at school for when we are playing outside. This is a much more cost efficient and environmentally friendly option to using all of those paper cups.
Our student quote of the week:
“Do you know how to speak Indiana?” – Arhan
Have a great weekend!

Well, here is your chance to find out.
This is an invitation to our students and their siblings above the age of 8.
We would like to get together a class to participate in a PADI Bubblemakers class.
For $20 and a possible pool fee, your child will have the opportunity to put on SCUBA gear, and take their first breath underwater.
We will have the expertise of Southern Indiana Scuba as our dive instructors.
We hope for this to take place on a weekend in early November. Please let us know if you are interested as we will need a head count as early as possible for gear and scheduling.
For more information please click here: PADI Bubblemaker
Click here to view the Southern Indiana Scuba site.
We are excited to extend this exciting adventure to our families!

We love apples! This week we learned all about apples; their life cycle, the different varieties and even how to use them with paint. We also had an “apple tasting,” where we tasted three different kinds of apples and recorded our favorites. The Red Delicious was the winner for this group!
We are continuing our continents study and have several jobs on the shelves to help us learn them. You may see a lot of world and continent stamping pages make it home as this was a big hit in the classroom. We will soon be starting our continent “poking” projects.
Our science studies introduced us to the concepts of “magnetic” and “nonmagnetic.” We will be learning all about “magnetism” and how it can be found all around us. If you have a spare magnet available, maybe you and your child could find magnetic items at home. Like a treasure hunt!
Miss Darci and I are so proud of our hard workers. It’s a true joy to watch them experience and learn from what we have prepared for their classroom!
Our student quote of the week:
“I wish I had a robot sister…mine’s just plain.” – Lincoln
Have a great weekend!
Miss Holly.
